King Hall Hosts 15 J.D. Exchange Students from Around the World and Sends Students Abroad for 2016-17 Academic Year
UC Davis School of Law is hosting 10 J.D. Exchange students from India, Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland, and China during the Fall 2016 semester. The Irish exchange students will remain through the Spring 2017 semester, when they will be joined by two more Indian and three more Chinese exchanged students.
J.D. Exchange Program Coordinator Charlie Lemcke notes that the School of Law is “honored by the growing worldwide interest in exchange partnerships with the UC Davis School of Law. We are already realizing the benefits that come to our own students and to the students of our partner law schools through increasingly diverse exchange opportunities.”
Associate Dean Beth Greenwood leads the J.D. Exchange program at the School of Law. “We are thrilled to welcome J.D. Exchange students from our partner law schools each semester,” says Greenwood. “Their presence at King Hall allows for mutually enriching cultural and scholarly sharing with faculty and students, which supports the mission of the School of Law. In turn, we are so grateful to our partner law schools, which provide challenging and exciting opportunities for our King Hall J.D. students to experience legal education and culture abroad.”
Neelakshi Bhadauria is a student at Jindal Global Law School in India. For her semester at King Hall, she chose courses in copyright, alternative dispute resolution, and international environmental law. “I studied these courses back home,” says Ms. Bhadauria, “but they were extremely different here because we studied American case law exclusively, which was excellent for me.” She wants to experience legal education abroad as she plans ahead for her LL.M. “I was worried about making friends with American students, but everyone here is so nice. I am really grateful, and now I want to go home and get involved with the exchange students who come to my law school!”
Amanda Bruyant-Langer joined the King Hall community from the University of Copenhagen. Participating in an exchange program is important to Amanda so she can see how the common law system works. (Denmark utilizes a civil law system.) Bruyant-Langer is taking business associations, copyright and international trade law. She loves the way courses are taught in the U.S. “I think the level of education here is very high,” she says. “We don’t have the cold-calling approach—also called the Socratic method—at home. I think it’s a really effective approach, at least for me. It forces me to prepare for and participate in the courses much more than I have before, and I feel that I learn more.”
