King Hall faculty, staff members to speak at AALS online conference in January
Dean Kevin R. Johnson, Senior Associate Dean Afra Afsharipour and several other members of the UC Davis School of Law faculty and staff are on the program for the Association of American Law Schools online conference Jan. 5-9, 2021.
“The Power of Words” is the theme of the conference, which will be entirely virtual this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sessions will take place between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. EST; times listed below are EST.
Dean Kevin Johnson is on the Executive Committee of the AALS Civil Rights Section and will participate in discussions for law school leaders.
Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Afra Afsharipour serves on the executive committees for the AALS Section on Business Associations, AALS Section on Comparative Law, and the AALS Section on Law & South Asian Studies. She will present her work at two sessions:
-- “Women and M&A,” in a Section on Transactional Law & Skills session, co-sponsored by Business Associations: “The New Public Interest in Private Markets: Transactional Innovation for Promoting Inclusion,” selected from a call for papers. It begins at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7.
-- “Power and Pay in the C-Suite,” in a Section on Socio-Economics session: “New Developments in Socio-Economics -- Does Shareholder Primacy Exacerbate Racial, Gender, and Economic Inequality?” 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7.
Professor Stacy-Ann Elvy will be a panelist for the Section on European Law and Defamation and Privacy Joint Program: “Comparing Data Protection Structures in the European Union and the United States,” 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5.
Professor Shayak Sarkar will speak on the panel for the Section on Employment Discrimination Law, Co-Sponsored by Labor Relations and Employment Law: "New & Emerging Voices in Labor and Employment Law," 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6.
Professor Jasmine E. Harris is the moderator for a panel discussion for the Section on Evidence, Co-Sponsored by the Sections on Civil Rights, Criminal Justice, Minority Groups, and Law and the Social Sciences: “Unregulated Evidence,” at 1:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8.
Harris also will be a speaker at the AALS Hot Topic program on “Disability and COVID-19: Lessons From Disability, Lessons From the Pandemic.” It begins at 2:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8. In addition, she and Professor Brian Soucek will be panelists for the Section on Civil Procedure: “Integrating Critical Legal Perspectives” at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8.
Professor David Horton, in his capacity as chair-elect of the Section on Trusts and Estates, is organizing and moderating the section’s panel on “New Developments in Trusts and Estates” at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8.
Professor Elizabeth Joh will be a speaker for the Section on Internet and Computer Law, co-sponsored by National Security Law, 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7.
Professor Carlton Larson serves on the executive committees for the sections on Legal History and Law and the Humanities.
Professor Albert C. Lin will be a commentator at the Section on Environmental Law’s works-in-progress “New Scholarship” session, 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7.
Soucek is chair-elect of the Section on Law and the Humanities, and also serves as a member of the Executive Committee for the Section on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues.
He will be a speaker, along with Harris, at the Section of Civil Procedure’s session on “Integrating Critical Legal Perspectives,” 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8.
Karen Charney, Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations, will be among the speakers for one of the Institutional Advancement Concurrent Sessions: “Strategize the Case for Support -- Not Just About Raising Money,” at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7.
