King Hall Faculty Speak at International Migration and Asylum Conference in Geneva

Dean Kevin R. Johnson and Professors Leticia Saucedo, Brian Soucek, and Rose Cuison Villazor spoke at the Migration and Asylum Symposium 2016 hosted by the University of Geneva October 10-11.  UC Davis, together with the University of Geneva and the League of European Research Universities, was a co-organizer of the event, and plans are underway for UC Davis to host a follow-up conference on refugees and migrants.

The Geneva conference included a day of closed workshops for researchers and representatives of international organizations as well as a day-long public symposium on global migration and refugees issues. Discussions ranged over issues including responses to Syrian refugees in Europe, the U.S. response to Central American asylum seekers, and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's proposals on migration.

The King Hall contingent was part of group of UC Davis faculty participating in the conference that included Vice Provost and Associate Chancellor for Global Affairs Joanna Regulska, Associate Professor of Asian American Studies Robyn Rodriguez, Professor Emeritus of Agricultural and Resource Economics Philip Martin, Professor and Director of Human Rights Studies Keith Watenpaugh, and Associate Professor of Political Science Jeannette Money.

Dean Johnson participated in a workshop on “Comparative perspectives across the Atlantic” and moderated a panel on “The architecture of international governance.” Professor Saucedo spoke as part of a workshop on “Access to work and the migration compact.” Professor Soucek participated in a workshop on “Gender, international migration and protection.”  Professor Villazor took part in the “Responsibility-sharing for refugee protection” workshop.
