King Hall centers welcome legal fellows Sunshine Saldivar '18 and Ken Wang '18

The Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies and the California Environmental Law & Policy Center have welcomed new legal fellows for the 2018-2019 academic year. Both are members of the King Hall class of 2018.

Sunshine Saldivar, the new environmental law fellow, received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology, with an emphasis in global studies, from UC Santa Barbara. While a student at King Hall, she focused her studies on environmental law and policy, and received the law school’s Environmental Certificate. She also served as a teaching assistant in King Hall’s Legal Research and Writing program; as an editor of the Journal of International Law and Policy, and as a board member of King Hall’s Water Association of Law and Policy.

During her fellowship, Saldivar will assist Professor of Environmental Practice and CELPC Director Richard M. Frank in overseeing CELPC’s programs and policy initiatives. She also will undertake extensive independent legal scholarship in one or more areas of environmental law.

Ken Wang, legal fellow at the Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies, came to UC Davis School of Law as a student after spending many years organizing workers in San Francisco’s Chinatown. His interest in the intersection of worker and immigrant rights stems from his experience as a first-generation immigrant who witnessed the sacrifices his family made in their trans-Pacific journey. Inspired by his upbringing, Wang spent his summers during law school working at various legal-aid organizations and plaintiff-side law firms to advance the rights of low-wage immigrant workers. His background also motivated him to take part in a student-led effort to create a first-generation law students support program (First Generation Advocates) to ensure that King Hall is responsive to their needs.

As the Aoki Center’s legal fellow, Wang will continue his research on policy shaping the future of work in the low-wage sector.
