KHOP summer session welcomes 22 law-school hopefuls from around the state
The King Hall Outreach Program’s 2018 summer session began on Saturday, June 23. Twenty-two students have joined the program. They have received or soon will receive undergraduate degrees from Brandman University, CSU East Bay, CSU Monterey Bay, Sacramento State, Occidental College, San Diego State University, San Francisco State University, Santa Clara University, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Merced, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, and USC. All are first-generation college students.
Established in 2001, the King Hall Outreach Program (KHOP) is a unique initiative that helps college students from underrepresented communities prepare for the law-school admissions process. The summer session kicks off a longer relationship between KHOP and the students that lasts throughout the students’ law-school application process and beyond.
The summer-session students returned to King Hall on Saturday, June 30, to experience a law school class with Professor Irene Joe, and take a mock LSAT.
On July 21, they will learn about financial aid from Director of Financial Aid Montré Everett. They will also hear from our alumni speaker, Anel Carrasco ’11. Current School of Law students (and KHOP alumni) Aaron Bonner ’19, Juan Gamboa ’19, Jessica Martinez ’19 and Kristina Muñoz ’19 will share their stories in a panel discussion and Q&A session.
They will learn about the current immigration crisis from Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Diversity and Professor of Law Raquel Aldana. And they’ll meet Admission & Financial Aid Assistant Manuel Alvarez, who will share his experience interning with City Year.
On Friday, July 27, the students will visit the courtroom of the Honorable Stacy Elaine Boulware Eurie '95 of the Superior Court of Sacramento County. On Saturday, July 28, Dean Kevin R. Johnson will join the students for lunch, and they also will meet Assistant Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Kristen Mercado and Assistant Director of Admission Alexis Elston, for personal-statement and resume review.
