Karima Bennoune to Assess Cultural Rights in Cyprus

Professor Karima Bennoune will visit Cyprus from May 24 till June 2 in her role as United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights to assess the country's efforts to improve the ability of citizens to participate in cultural life and to access cultural heritage.  The announcement of her visit drew coverage from media including Cyprus Mail.

Bennoune will meet with government authorities and a wide range of stakeholders working in the fields of cultural policies, cultural heritage and cultural rights, including academics and institutions.

"I am eager to learn how Cyprus understands the realization of cultural rights and endeavours to implement them through its policies, especially in the areas of access and enjoyment of cultural heritage," said Bennoune.

Karima Bennoune is an author, lecturer, teacher, and international law scholar as well as the first Arab-American to be honored with the Derrick A. Bell Award from the Section on Minority Groups of the Association of American Law Schools. In October 2015, she was appointed UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights.  She was recently presented with the 2016 Rights and Leaderhip Award by IANGEL, the International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law.
