Kahrs '97 Honored by Washington Law & Politics
Michael Charles Kahrs '97 was awarded a merit award as a Rising Star by Washington Law & Politics. Kahrs, after a previous career testing naval nuclear reactors, returned to school at UC Davis School of Law to obtain his J.D. While his initial focus was intellectual property, civil rights quickly became his passion. As a student, Kahrs successfully represented in federal court an incarcerated preoperative transsexual, housed in a men's prison, to obtain needed female hormones.
Since graduating, Kahrs has focused on related areas of law, including prison law, civil rights, the Public Records Act, and post-conviction relief (state and federal), among others. His post-conviction litigation resulted in a published opinion by the Ninth Circuit and a subsequent reversal of a state court conviction, by successfully arguing that counsel was ineffective based upon an evidentiary hearing.
Besides civil rights, Kahrs litigates false imprisonment claims, Public Records Act violations and other general civil actions. His prison law practice encompasses challenges to classification, medical care, infractions, sex offender registration levels, and parole hearings, among other issues.
The Rising Star issue of Washington Law & Politics is published annually in December . Washington Law & Politics names the top young lawyers in Washington as chosen by Washington Law & Politics and through the independent research of Law & Politics. All Washington Rising Stars are 40 or younger or have been in practice for 10 years or less. Only 2.5 percent of Washington attorneys are named Rising Stars.
