Johnson Quoted on Immigration news in USA Today and Associated Press
Kevin Johnson, professor and associate dean of the UC Davis School of Law, was quoted in USA Today on a U.S District Judge's ruling on a Hazleton, Pennsylvania law that sought to fine landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and suspend business licenses of companies that hire them. The Judge found the measure unconstitutional and said immigration policies are a federal, not local, responsibility.
Since Hazleton approved the law a year ago, about 100 localities have proposed similar ordinances. "A lot of them are going to get struck down," Johnson said in the article. "These ordinances, especially those very similar to the Hazleton ordinance, are at risk."
Johnson was also quoted in the Houston Chronicle on local governments regulating immigration. "Local governments can't regulate immigration, and the Hazleton ordinance was an effort to punish the undocumented and that's not the role of the state government," Johnson said in the article. "I think the precedent is pretty clear."
