Johnson Named Chicana/o Studies Scholar of the Year

The National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS), the leading Chicana/o Studies organization in the United States, named Associate Dean Kevin R. Johnson as a 2008 NACCS Scholar. The Award was established in 1981 to recognize "life achievement" contributions of scholars to Chicana and Chicano Studies. Johnson was noted for "deftly weaving prolific scholarship alongside teaching, mentoring, and community activism." Previous award winners incude Carey McWilliams, Julian Samora, Ernesto Galarza, Rodolfo Acuna, Adaljiza Sosa Riddell, and Gloria Anzaldúa. Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Kevin Johnson was also interviewed on WLYU radio in Georgia. The program, What is Goin' On, hosted by Wilson Smith, aired on December 13, 2007. Johnson discussed his new book Opening the Floodgates: Why America Needs to Rethink its Borders and Immigration Laws (NYU Press 2007).
