Iowa Supreme Court Justice's Opinion Cites Two Articles by Professor Chin

An Iowa Supreme Court justice cited two articles by Professor Gabriel “Jack” Chin in a concurring opinion in Doss v. Iowa, in which the court affirmed the judgment of lower courts in rejecting a sex offender’s challenge to aspects of his lifetime special parole sentence, maintaining that there was no error.

Justice Brent R. Appel cited Chin’s 2010 Criminal Justice collaboration with Margaret Colgate Love, “Status as Punishment: A Critical Guide to Padilla v. Kentucky,” and Chin’s 2002 Cornell Law Review collaboration with Richard W. Holmes Jr., “Effective Assistance of Counsel and the Consequences of Guilty Pleas.”

Gabriel "Jack" Chin is Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Law and holder of the Edward L. Barrett, Jr. Endowed Chair at UC Davis School of Law.  He is a prolific and much-cited criminal and immigration law scholar whose work has addressed many of the most pressing social issues of our time.
