Immigration Law Clinic’s 25th Anniversary
The UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic (ILC) is celebrating the anniversary of its first year of operation. In addition, Professor James E. Smith, the Clinic Founder, is retiring this year.
To honor the quarter century of service by clinic students and Smith, a celebration and reunion is planned for September 14-15, 2007 by the Clinic and the ILC Alumni Council. Events include an award ceremony and banquet dinner and an immigration-related MCLE program with luncheon. At the award ceremony, individuals who have contributed to the Clinic and its causes over the years will be recognized, as well as one individual who will receive the newly established James F. Smith Legacy Award.
The Clinic, established in the fall of 1981, was one of the first of its kind in the country. The Clinic remains unique in that it is one of the only clinics in the nation devoted to representing detained immigrants before the immigration court and contesting their confinement. For 25 years, students have served the state's large community of both documented and undocumented migrants and have helped people from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, and Eastern Europe.
While students in the Clinic develop practical lawyering skills for the transition from student to practitioner, they are also developing deep bonds with fellow immigration-law advocates, which include students, faculty, staff, alumni, legal practitioners, and the larger community in which they serve.
The ILC Celebration and Reunion offers alumni the opportunity to reconnect with each other and reflect on the Clinic, its work in the community, and its role in fostering within each student advocate a sense of purpose.
