History Channel Quotes Professor Chin on Chol Soo Lee Case
Professor Gabriel “Jack” Chin spoke to the History channel website about the wrongful conviction of, and groundbreaking community efforts to free, Chol Soo Lee, a Korean immigrant and death row inmate released from San Quentin in 1983.
The groundswell of support behind Lee’s release represents an “early example of multi-ethnic APA [Asian Pacific American] political action,” Chin said.
The History article also quotes Richard Kim of UC Davis’ Asian American Studies department.
In 1980, the late California Supreme Court Justice and UC Davis Law Professor Emeritus Cruz Reynoso -- then a state Court of Appeal judge -- was on the panel that ordered the murder conviction that sent Chol Soo Lee to prison be set aside.
Gabriel "Jack" Chin is Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law and holder of the Edward L. Barrett Jr. Endowed Chair at UC Davis School of Law. He is a prolific and much-cited criminal and immigration law scholar whose work has addressed many of the most pressing social issues of our time.
