Gary Solis ’71 Interviewed on PBS News Hour
Gary Solis ’71, one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the law of armed conflict, was interviewed on the nationally broadcast PBS program News Hour on January 17. Solis discussed the charges against the former commanders of two naval destroyers that were involved in separate deadly collisions in the Pacific Ocean. Both men are facing charges including negligent homicide.
The situation is “more than extremely rare,” said Solis. “It’s never happened before.”
Solis said he expected the cases to be resolved with pretrial agreements and guilty pleas.
“The purpose of these court-martials, in my estimation, is as much as to send a warning to other commanders, as it is to address the alleged shortcomings of these officers,” said Solis.
