Professor Shanske Talks to Fortune Magazine About More Taxes for Wealthy

Fortune magazine quoted Professor  Darien Shanske in a Dec. 24 story headlined “Millionaire tax plans spread as Washington state eyes new levy."

The story explores efforts by Democratic leaders in Washington and other states to raise taxes on the wealthy amid a wealth gap recently widened by the Trump administration’s tax breaks for high earners and cuts to Medicaid and other federally funded services.

“This unnecessary emergency is laying down a gauntlet for states,” Shanske told Fortune. “Will they let this suffering come to pass and, if not, how will they pay for the triage? Taxes on the best-off are not just fair but also efficient.”

Darien Shanske is a Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law at UC Davis. His academic interests include taxation, particularly state and local taxation, local government law, public finance, and political theory, particularly jurisprudence.
