Each year, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., the law school holds an MLK Day of Service and Celebration on the MLK Monday holiday. The Black Law Students Association (BLSA), Law Students Association (LSA), and the MLK Day Working Group made up of students from each class year, come together with members of the administration and faculty to put on this great day-long event.
2021 MLK Day of Service and Celebration
Day of Service: Participants in MLK Day 2021 will have four options to provide service to the Davis community, or their local communities where they are housed during the COVID-19 pandemic. (If you are a community member and would like to volunteer, please email Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Fellow Alexis Elston at email@example.com.) These options include:
- Blood Drive at King Hall Parking Lot: Volunteers will select at time and donate much needed blood to Vitalant Blood Source, a partner of UC Davis.
Government Benefits Webinar and Clinic via Zoom: Trained volunteers will provide informational webinars on CalFresh and housing evictions, and help community members determine eligibility for benefits.
- UC Davis Law MLK Day Working Group and BLSA acknowledge the unfairness and discrimination associated with federal regulations relating to the giving of blood. We stand in partnership with our LGBTQIA colleagues and urge the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to revisit its policies. Please see the Chancellor’s Statement on donating blood for further details.
Essentials Donation Drop-off: UC Davis Law is accepting donations to be dropped off at King Hall on Monday, January 18th. Donations will be provided to Saint John's Program for Real Change in Sacramento, California. List of acceptable items is here. Monetary donations are also appreciated and can be provided here.
Day of Service in Your Community: If you are unable to attend the service options above, we invite you to donate your time on January 18th to a cause near (and dear) to you! Please let us know how you will be serving the community by clicking here. Feel free to send pictures or just tell us how it went for you!
- Training is required in order to volunteer (prior training is okay) and trainings will take place on Friday, January 15th
Celebration: Please come celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the King Hall connection at 12:00 p.m. noon on Monday, January 18th on Zoom (please reach out to Alexis Elston to RSVP). Our program includes BLSA President Alexis Logan, UC Davis Law Dean Kevin Johnson and our keynote speaker, Pragna Patel, Director of Southall Black Sisters in London, England.
