Esmeralda Soria ’11 Appointed Fresno City Council President

Esmeralda Soria ’11 has been appointed as president of the Fresno City Council. Soria was elected to the council in 2014 and became the first woman to represent Fresno’s District 1. She is the second Latina to serve on the council, according to an article on her appointment in Vide en el valle.

Soria was rotated into the council president position by agreement of her fellow councilmembers. She will now be in charge of council meetings and will perform the mayor’s duties in his absence. The daughter of Mexican immigrant farmworkers, Soria also has worked as a law professor and as an advisor to California Assembly member Henry T. Perea.
