Dean Johnson Talks to Dallas Morning News About Texas' Bid for Immigration Control

Dean Kevin R. Johnson spoke to the Dallas Morning News about a new Texas law that seeks to wrest power over immigration enforcement from the federal government. The law would allow state judges to deport unauthorized migrants apprehended near the border.

The law was supposed to take effect in March. But federal courts have blocked it, and the Biden administration also has pushed back.

“The message is that the U.S. government is in charge of immigration admissions and removals,” Johnson told the Morning News.

Kevin R. Johnson is the law school’s dean, Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and professor of Chicana/o studies at UC Davis. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
