Dean Johnson Speaks on Secure Communities Program to Mexican Consuls

Dean Kevin R. Johnson spoke last week to a gathering of the ten Consuls of Mexico in California as part of a panel discussion of the Department of Homeland Security's Secure Communities program.  According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the program "seeks to identify and deport criminal aliens."  The program has generated concerns in Mexican American communities in California and around the nation.  The panel was held on April 12 at Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramento.  Sacramento Police Chief Arturo Venegas and Immigrant Legal Resource Center Staff Attorney Angie Junck also participated.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
