Dean Johnson Ranks in Top 10 of Most-Cited Critical Race Theory Scholars

Dean Kevin R. Johnson is one of the most-cited legal scholars of all time in the category of critical race theory/feminist jurisprudence, according to a new study by Yale Associate Library Director Fred R. Shapiro published in the University of Chicago Law Review.

Shapiro’s essay, “The Most-Cited Legal Scholars Revisited,” includes a list of the 50 most-cited U.S. legal scholars of all time along with breakdowns for individual areas. Johnson ranks ninth among Shapiro’s top 10 “Most-Cited Critical Race Theory and Feminist Jurisprudence Scholars of All Time.”

Shapiro combined critical race theory and feminist jurisprudence into a single category “because of the similar questions and themes they address,” he writes in the essay.

The new study follows up “The Most-Cited Legal Scholars,” Shapiro’s 2000 study published in the Journal of Legal Studies. Shapiro’s new study includes data from the HeinOnline law review database along with further research into citations to books.

In October, Johnson was recognized as the most-cited immigration law scholar in the U.S. in University of Chicago Professor Brian Leiter’s highly influential scholarly rankings.

Kevin R. Johnson is the law school’s dean, Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and professor of Chicana/o studies at UC Davis. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
