Dean Johnson Publishes in New York Times on Immigration Reform
Dean Kevin R. Johnson published an essay on immigration reform in "Room for Debate," a feature of the New York Times website. Dean Johnson's article appears as part of a group of op-eds on the subject of whether President Obama has the power to exempt unauthorized immigrants from deportation through executive action.
"By expanding deferrals of deportation of unauthorized immigrants, President Obama would simply be continuing federal policy of focusing enforcement on criminal aliens," Dean Johnson writes. The president "unquestionably has the power to exercise prosecutorial discretion and grant temporary status to undocumented immigrants with deep ties to the United States," he continues.
Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
