Dean Johnson Publishes Immigration Op-ed in Sacramento Bee

Dean Kevin R. Johnson  published an op-ed in the Sacramento Bee on United States v. Texas, in which a deadlocked U.S. Supreme Court let stand an injunction barring implementation of the Obama administration's Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) immigration reform program.

Dean Johnson's article outlines the history of the DAPA program and other recent attempts to reform the nation's immigration laws, and points out that regardless of the Court's "non-decision" in U.S. v. Texas, immigration will "return to the political arena."

"The debate will return to Congress," writes Dean Johnson. "Bolstered enforcement, reforms to the legal immigration rules and a path to lawful status for some undocumented immigrants are needed.  Each aspect of immigration reform raises thorny political questions that require careful deliberation and rational discourse."

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
