Dean Johnson Publishes Immigration Essay on TIME Website
Dean Kevin R. Johnson published an essay on TIME magazine's website on the need to relax legal restrictions on immigration in light of the Syrian refugee crisis and other examples of "large scale migration flows caused by civil war, mass disaster or severe economic deprivation."
"Even after the hostilities in Syria calm, the world inevitably will see future cycles of mass migration from economic, political, social or environmental upheaval," Dean Johnson writes. "We as a global community must reform the law to remedy its inability to respond to sporadic large migration flows in an orderly, flexible, and humanitarian fashion. More liberal admissions standards that can respond quickly and flexibly to accommodate larger flows of people while ensuring public safety can be compatible."
Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
