Dean Johnson, Professors Aldana and Cooper to speak about family separations

UC Davis School of Law Dean Kevin Johnson,UC Davis Vice Chancellor for Academic Diversity and Professor of Law Raquel Aldana, and Immigration Law Clinic Co-Director Holly Cooper will speak at the Sept. 24 “Family Separation at the Border: Beyond the Crisis” event at USC Price School in Sacramento, 1800 I St., Sacramento. The program begins at 5 p.m.

The speakers will address the long-term legal consequences of the separations of migrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border earlier this year under the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy.

World Affairs Sacramento is presenting the event in partnership with UC Davis, USC Sol Price School of Public Policy and Sacramento Area Congregations Together.

Kevin R. Johnson is dean, Mabie-Apallas professor of public interest law and professor of Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.

Raquel Aldana’s scholarship has focused on transitional justice, criminal justice reforms, and sustainable development in Latin America, as well as immigrant rights in the United States. “From Extraction to Emancipation: Development Reimagined,” a 2018 volume Aldana co-edited, examines broad global themes arising from development practices, including the theme of migration and development.

Professor Holly S. Cooper ’98,co-director of the Immigration Law Clinic, has extensive litigation experience defending the rights of immigrants and is a nationally recognized expert on immigration detention issues and on the immigration consequences of criminal convictions.
