Dean Johnson, Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary Support Sotomayor

Dean Kevin R. Johnson participated in a media call organized by Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary to support the nomination of Federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor as a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter.  The June 11 event was covered in the BLT:  The Blog of Legal Times.

Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary, a nonpartisan network of elected officials, lawyers, academics, and civil rights leaders, brought together a group of law professors including Dean Johnson to speak in support of Sotomayor's confirmation.   The professors emphasized that Sotomayor is a moderate who relies heavily on precedent in deciding cases.

"She's very much a moderate in the mainstream of judges," Dean Johnson said.

Kevin R. Johnson is dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o Studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
