Dean Johnson Comments on Upcoming Immigration Ruling for Reuters
Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented on the federal court challenge to Arizona's controversial new immigration law, SB 1070, for a report by the Reuters news agency.
U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton will hear oral arguments this week regarding the measure and could grant a preliminary injunction to prevent implementation of the law. Dean Johnson commented that Judge Bolton may decide to grant a partial injunction, allowing some sections of the law to go into effect.
While the federal government's claim focuses on the issue of federal preemption in immigration enforcement, suits filed by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund and American Civil Liberties Union challenge other aspects of the measure, such as prohibitions against hiring day laborers off the streets. The Court is likely to respond with a "section-by-section analysis" of the different claims, Dean Johnson said.
