Dean Johnson Comments on ‘the Trump Effect' for The Guardian
Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for The Guardian on the ways in which Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's provocative comments regarding immigrants have impacted the statements and positions of other contenders. Trump's inflammatory rhetoric and calls for stricter border security have brought him widespread media attention and early success in polls of likely Republican voters, prompting other candidates to abandon more moderate positions.
"It's the Trump effect," said Dean Johnson. "He has staked out an enforcement position over immigration and that in turn has moved everybody else over to enforcement thinking." Dean Johnson said it was likely that "the Trump effect will delay [immigration] reform for the foreseeable future."
Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
