Dean Johnson Comments on Trasviña Nomination for Daily Journal

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for the Daily Journal on President Obama's announcement of his intent to nominate John Trasviña, currently president and general counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), to become assistant secretary for fair housing and equal opportunity at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"John is a very hardworking, smart, consensus-building leader," Dean Johnson told the Daily Journal. "He's very smart as a litigator and a leader of an organization that, among other things, brings lawsuits to vindicate civil rights of immigrants, Latinos and poor people generally." Dean Johnson, who is a member of MALDEF's board, also noted that Trasviña had helped to refocus MALDEF's civil rights litigation strategy and acted as the organization's public face.

Kevin R. Johnson is dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
