Dean Johnson Comments on Supreme Court Immigration Cases for Law 360
Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Law 360 on immigration cases that the U.S. Supreme Court may choose to hear in coming sessions. Dean Johnson noted that the Supreme Court has taken on a number of cases in recent years that touched on whether a criminal conviction can result in deportation. Last term, in Mellouli v. Lynch, the Supreme Court reversed a decision upholding a Tunisian man's removal for possessing a sock that allegedly contained Adderall.
"The Obama administration has taken consistently tough positions and a conservative Supreme Court has consistently rejected those tough positions," Dean Johnson said.
Dean Johnson also commented on Molina-Martinez v. U.S., which Dean Johnson said was "a basic statutory interpretation case focusing on the sentencing guidelines."
Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
