Dean Johnson Comments on SB 1070 Hearing for Washington Post, KPFA

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit hearings on SB 1070, Arizona's controversial immigration law, for a news report by the Associated Press that ran in the Washington Post and other newspapers and for KPFA radio.

SB 1070 has been compared to California's Proposition 187, the 1994 ballot initiative that sought to create a state-run citizenship screening system in order to prohibit undocumented immigrants from using state services.  Prop. 187 was found unconstitutional in a federal court.

"In the history books, 20 years from now, people will be talking about the two state initiatives," Dean Johnson said in his Associated Press interview.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
