Dean Johnson Comments on Sacramento Sheriff and Immigration Reform for KCRA, KXTV, and Sacramento Bee
Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for The Sacramento Bee and television stations KXTV, KCRA, and KOVR on a video posted online by Sacramento County Sheriff Scott R. Jones calling on President Obama to reform the nation's immigration laws. Dean Johnson points out that President Obama can only take temporary executive action on immigration, and it is up to Congress to address long-term, comprehensive reforms.
"To say that the president is at fault because Congress has failed to act would seem to not fully understand a basic elementary principle of junior high civics," Dean Johnson told KXTV. He also noted that the president could extend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a 2012 executive order instructing immigration officials to practice prosecutorial discretion towards some undocumented individuals who immigrated to the United States as children, to include adults.
Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
