Dean Johnson Comments for New York Times on Citizenship Status of First Lady's Parents

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for the New York Times on the citizenship status of Viktor and Amalia Knavs, the parents of First Lady Melania Trump. The Knavs, who are natives of Slovenia, have obtained lawful permanent residency, the Times reports, but declined to state how they achieved their legal status.

“In some ways, lawful permanent resident status is the best of all visas,” Dean Johnson said. “It’s the Cadillac of immigrant visas because it allows you a path to citizenship.”

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
