Dean Johnson Comments on Immigration Proposal for SFGate.com
Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for "In the Mission," a blog on the San Francisco Chronicle's SFGate.com website, regarding San Francisco Supervisor David Campos's proposal to give undocumented juveniles arrested on felony charges the opportunity for a hearing before being referred to Immigration Control and Enforcement officials. Current policy requires police to alert the ICE before a hearing takes place.
Dean Johnson described the proposal as a welcome development, noting that "There is no law that requires state or local governments to cooperate with federal immigration efforts. Police officers in California aren't allowed to inquire about immigration status."
Kevin R. Johnson is dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o Studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
