Dean Johnson Comments on Immigration Laws for Press-Enterprise

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented on the efforts by some California cities to enact immigration control laws for an article in The Press-Enterprise, a Riverside County newspaper.  The city councils of Hemet and Lake Elsinore have passed resolutions endorsing SB 1070, Arizona's controversial new immigration law, and Menifee passed a law requiring businesses to use the federal E-Verify system to check employees' immigration status.

Cities and counties across the nation are passing similar laws, Dean Johnson said, and immigration is becoming a part of council agendas regardless of whether a region is liberal or conservative.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
