Dean Johnson Comments on Deportation Case for Pilar Morrero
Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Pilar Morrero on the case of U.S. citizen girl who was deported to Guatemala while her non-citizen parents remained in the United States. The child was returning to the U.S. with her grandfather when he was arrested by immigration authorities at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. and deported. The girl was also deported, leading to questions as to whether the Customs and Border Protection Agency had taken appropriate steps to reunite the child with her family.
"Usually what happens is that a citizen child actually ends up being deported with her parents who are undocumented," said Dean Johnson. "This case is different, this girl is a citizen."
Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
