Dean Johnson Comments on Chinese ‘Birth Tourism' for The Independent
Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Britain's The Independent on the growing number of Chinese couples engaging in "birth tourism," travelling to countries including the United States to give birth in order to obtain better medical care, circumvent China's one-child policy, and secure birthright citizenship for their children.
The practice is not against U.S. law, but some feel it is "a manipulation of American laws and we should change them," Dean Johnson said. "To many people it just seems shady."
Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
