Dean Johnson Comments for Capital Public Radio on Justice Moreno

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented on the retirement of Justice Carlos Moreno from the California Supreme Court for a news report on Capital Public Radio.  Dean Johnson suggested that Justice Moreno is likely be best remembered as the sole dissenter in the Court's ruling upholding Proposition 8, the state's same-sex marriage ban.

"I think that his willingness to stand up and to register an opinion on a controversial issue in a difficult time when he was in a distinct minority will go down in state judicial history as a monument or milestone," said Dean Johnson.

Justice Moreno spoke at King Hall in March 2009 as part of La Raza Law Students Association César Chávez Week celebration and delivered the Bridgette M. Bodenheimer Lecture in February 2010.  The lecture has been published in the UC Davis Law Review was "The Promise of Equality: The Evolution of the Family in California."

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
