CNN reports on war-crimes investigator Chris Engels '04, Syrian 'document hunters'
On May 28, CNN reported on the arrests of former Syrian officials in conjunction with evidence smuggled out of Syria by “document hunters” assisted by Chris Engels ’04 and the Commission for International Justice and Accountability (CIJA).
Engels is director of investigations and operations for CIJA, a nonprofit organization funded by Western governments. CIJA has acquired more than 800,000 Syrian intelligence and security documents. The nonprofit uses these papers to build cases and current and former Syrian officials implicated in some of the worst human rights abuses by the Bashar al-Assad regime.
