Celebrating 40 Years of Excellence

This fall, the Law School begins celebrating the early years of the UC Davis School of Law. In 1965, Founding Dean Edward L. Barrett, Jr., envisioned a law school with a strong tradition of providing a rigorous academic program in law while supporting the intellectual, professional and ethical development of students. He began a nationwide search to recruit high-level new faculty members to serve as the nucleus for the school. The law library was established and within a year, 30,000 volumes were purchased and collected for teaching and legal research. Student recruitment began for the following fall and 441 applications were received.

Forty years later, the Law School remains one of the top public law schools in the country. The distinguished faculty are nationally and internationally renowned. The law library contains over 280,000 volumes. Student applications numbered 3,768 for just under 200 openings for the fall of 2005. Our successful alumni are found in all of the diverse areas of the legal and business worlds.

Over the next four years, the UC Davis School of Law will celebrate many landmark beginnings at the Law School.
