Bloomberg Quotes Professor Shanske About Maryland Digital Ad Tax
Professor Darien Shanske spoke to Bloomberg Law for a Jan. 3 story about a Maryland Tax Court order calling for a lengthy discovery process in the legal battle over the state's first-in-the-nation digital advertising tax. Apple, Google, Meta and the Peacock streaming service have challenged the tax.
The move by the court is “the right decision,” said Shanske, who co-wrote a 2022 Notre Dame Law Review article in support of state digital services taxes. “There will be a real hearing as to whether or not digital ads are similar to traditional ads.”
Darien Shanske is a Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law at UC Davis. His academic interests include taxation, particularly state and local taxation, local government law, public finance, and political theory, particularly jurisprudence.
