Assoc. Dean Amar Comments on Same-Sex Marriage Lawsuit for SF Chronicle
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Vikram Amar commented on a same-sex couple's challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1996 law that reserves certain spousal benefits for male-female married couples in an article in the San Francisco Chronicle. At an upcoming hearing, an attorney for the same-sex couple plans to cite President Obama's criticism of the act, claiming the President's comments have legal significance. Amar observed, "I would say Obama was speaking in a nonlegal manner... more policy oriented."
