AALS Meeting in Washington, D.C.

UC Davis law professors attended the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) during the first week of January in Washington, D.C. This year's meeting emphasized expanding knowledge and serving our communities. The AALS is the only annual conference for all law professors.

Several faculty were invited to participate in panel discussions.

Professor and Associate Dean Kevin R. Johnson moderated the panel "Membership, Citizenship and Race," which explored recent domestic and global events in the areas of immigration, citizenship, and race. The purpose of the panel was to encourage interdisciplinary conversations between citizenship studies, immigrant, and civil rights scholars and to engage in using contemporary and controversial events and the theoretical justifications for immigration/citizenship studies and race discourse.

Professor Thomas W. Joo was part of the panel "Katrina and Race: The Multiple Dimensions." Panelists discussed the class and race dimensions of the ongoing Katrina tragedy and how those dimensions impact legal rules and paradigms brought to bear on and in response to the tragedy.

Assistant Dean Hollis L. Kulwin was part of the panel "The 'Wired' Generation: How Communication Technology Is Transforming Student Culture." The session examined trends in students' usage of technology featuring data gathered through the EDUCAUSE national survey. Speakers analyzed the personal, social, and academic impact on campuses of social networking interfaces and legal implications.

Professor Tobias Barrington Wolff participated in the panel, "Recognition of Same-Sex Marriage: Conflicts Law and Public Policy in a Globalizing Society." The panel examined the conflict of laws relevant to same-sex marriage. The speakers addressed questions of U.S. law triggered by recent developments.
