Early Happy Thanksgiving!

The first president to proclaim a day of thanksgiving was George Washington on October 3, 1789. To view the proclamation, as it appeared in the v.12, no.9 (October 14, 1789) issue of the Massachusetts Centinel newspaper, use the Archive of Americana.

All UC Davis affiliates have access to the CDL database, Archive of Americana. Their collection of "America's Historical Newspapers" includes newspapers from all 50 states, some dating as far back as 1690.

If you are on campus, use one of the public terminals to gain access to this online resource through the Databases A-Z webpage on the Shields library website, otherwise all UC Davis affiliates may log into Shields VPN if you are off-campus.
