At Valparaiso Law for the Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture

I had the honor of delivering the Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture at Valparaiso Law School in Valparaiso, Ind.  My remarks were titled “Immigration and Civil Rights in an Era of Trump.”  Among other things, I discussed the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the immigration of people of color from the developing world to the United States.  That, I elaborated, was contrary to Dr. King’s hope that we could evaluate people by the “content of their character,” not the color of their skin.

On the trip, I was able to visit with my friend Bernie Trujillo, who co-authored with me a law review article on immigration and national security and the book “Immigration Law and the U.S.-Mexico Border."

It also was an adventurous trip with an ice storm, snow, rain, slush, and single-digit temperatures.  A real Midwestern experience!!
