Unequal Profession: Race and Gender in Legal Academia

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, I attended a talk by Professor Meera Deo discussing her celebrated new book, Unequal Profession: Race and Gender in Legal Academia (Stanford University Press, 2019). Professor Deo’s book draws from the first empirical study of law faculty utilizing an intersectional lens to investigate raceXgender challenges and identify solutions to overcome barriers facing traditionally underrepresented faculty. 

In her talk, Professor Deo focused on the often under-recognized service done by women of color faculty. She then turned her attention to a topic of great debate in law schools and academia more generally: bias in student evaluations.  Professor Deo led the audience, which included a large number of very engaged King Hall students, to a great discussion on solutions for addressing bias in evaluations and in class. We are lucky to have Professor Deo as a visiting professor this year.
