Swearing-In Ceremony for Justice Patricia Guerrero

This week, I had the honor of attending the swearing-in ceremony for California Supreme Court Associate Justice Patricia Guerrero at the Leland Stanford Mansion in Sacramento. Governor Gavin Newsom was in attendance and introduced his nominee to the Supreme Court. California Supreme Court Chief Justice, and Class of 1984 King Hall alum, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, also gave welcome remarks.

Justice Guerrero, the daughter of immigrants from Mexico, offered some heartfelt remarks and thanked her family, including her father who was in attendance. She has a compelling personal story, having grown up in the Imperial Valley.

I sat with Professor Amagda Pérez, co-director of the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic, and Judge Emily Vasquez, a good friend of UC Davis School of Law. Dolores Huerta, a UFW co-founder, sat in our row as well. Judge Shama Mesiwala `98 also was in attendance at the swearing-in ceremony.

Judicial Appointments Secretary Luis Céspedes has done an outstanding job in helping to bring diversity and excellence to the California courts. Justice Guerrero is the latest in a stunning list of highly qualified judges added to the state bench.
