Schwartz/Levi Inn of Court
At the February meeting of the Schwartz/Levi Inn of Court, the inn discussed defunding the police. A number of speakers addressed the issue.
The topic is especially timely given that I am co-chairing a UC Davis task force evaluating the public safety function on campus. It also fit in well with Black History Month and the national discussion of defunding the police that has been advocated by the Black Lives Matter movement.
Dr. Jann Murray-García, community activist and faculty member of the School of Nursing, offered her views on police funding. She noted that Native American women are more likely to be killed by the police than African Americans. Dr. Murray-García offered some history behind race and police in the United States.
Chief Darren Pytel of the City of Davis Police Department spoke next. He discussed the hard work engaged in by officers to ensure public safety.
Karen Larsen, director of the Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency, ended the discussion.
It was a rich discussion on an important topic.
