The La Raza Law Students Association (LRLSA) hosted a wonderful 32 nd Annual Lorenzo Patiño Banquet, this year at the Stonegate Country Club in Davis. An enthusiastic group of alums, students, professors, and lawyers were in attendance, with a heartfelt keynote speech given by Marcela Ruiz, Deputy Director of California Rural Legal Assistance.
Ruiz inspired the students with stories of heroes who changed the world as well as ordinary people -- like her father, who changed his own.
The graduating LRLSA students were honored and the students named Raymundo Jacquez ‘14 as this year's Patiño Community Service Award winner. Raymundo before, during, and after law school, has devoted himself to serving his community and plans to return to his native Bay Area to pursue civil rights law. Professors Cruz Reynoso, Amagda Pérez (a previous Patiño Award winner), Larry Green, Clay Tanaka, and Rex Perschbacher (who has attended the banquet for over 20 years) were in attendance, as was Assistant Dean for Career Services Craig Compton.
It was wonderful to see an incredible group of students and alums in attendance, including previous Patiño Award winner Miguel Martin '84, Jennifer Rodriguez '04 (Executive Director of the Youth Law Center), Caridad Peña '11, Johnny Colón '13, and many others. Emilio Camacho '11 was a skillful -- and efficient -- Master of Ceremonies. Laura Flores ’15 presented an alumni award to Johnny Colón for his mentoring of King Hall students. It was a warm, enthusiasm and inspirational night for all and reminded me of the enduring spirit of community at King Hall.
