Congratulations to the Class of 2020! On Wednesday, Feb. 3, we held a virtual Swearing-In Ceremony. Sacramento Superior Court Judge Kara Ueda '00 delivered the state oath, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California Judge Troy Nunley delivered the federal oath and Kim Chase '07, our alumni board president, congratulated and encouraged our recent grads and now lawyers.

I wanted to recount what I shared with the graduates during the event here:

"Tonight’s ceremony is especially meaningful because it follows a most challenging year. What you accomplished by earning your law degree and passing the bar exam would be impressive in any year. But this year makes these achievements truly amazing. The pandemic changed your lives, your final semester of law school, and when and how you took the bar exam. But you persevered, with patience, resilience, and fortitude -- qualities that will serve you well in your career.

"You all should be proud. As licensed attorneys, you will stand for the rule of law. The rule of law has been under fire. But it is undefeated in the United States. In times like these, people need legal help to fight poverty, racial injustice, and more. But you already know the importance of helping people. The Class of 2020 devoted more than 20,000 hours to public service. The values of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are strong in you."
