Last week, the UC Davis School of Law hosted the Farm Labor 2019: Other Countries, California, and Immigration Conference. Professor Emeritus Phil Martin of the Agricultural Economics Department at UC Davis organizes this annual event.

There were three fascinating panels. The first one was on Farm labor in Australia, Canada, and Mexico. We had panelists from around the world.

The second panel looked at the farm labor market in the United States.

I participated on the third panel on immigration and agriculture. I discussed recent developments in U.S. immigration law and enforcement, including possibilities for reform.

A special treat was having two former students in the panel Julia Montgomery ‘96, general counsel for the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board, and Bianca Duenas ‘16, an attorney with California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation.

Participants travelled the world over to attend this annual conference. It was enlightening indeed to see the issues of farm labor in countries far and wide.
