Kicking off AALS 2021 Meeting
Happy New Year! For law professors, the new year brings the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Annual meeting. Although virtual this year because of the global pandemic, the annual meeting has brought together law professors from around the world.
UC Davis School of Law was present from the opening program of the first day. Professor Ed Imwinkelried, an evidence scholar of world renown and two-time award winner of the law school’s Distinguished Teaching Award, was honored with the Section on Evidence John Henry Wigmore Award for Lifetime Achievement.
In addition, the Section on Professional Responsibility’s Fred C. Zacharias Memorial Prize for Scholarship was given to Professor Irene Joe. Professor Joe is a criminal law and professional responsibility expert.
While Professors Imwinkelried and Joe were being honored in a ceremony featuring the AALS president and other luminaries, Professor Stacy-Ann Elvy spoke on the Section on European Law and Defamation and Privacy Joint Program on Comparing Data Protection Structures in the European Union and the United States . The program explored data collection and privacy structures in Europe and the United States. The panelists discussed the efficacy of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation as compared to the sectoral approach of the United States; consent; constitutional and other legal issues; and human rights. Professor Elvy provided a concise and insightful set of remarks, which were influenced by her upcoming book The Internet of Things: The Future of Commercial Law and Privacy (under contract with Cambridge University Press). The book explores the consumer and legal implications of the Internet of Things.
